The crew

Eight aboard: a human captain and a crew of AIs. Each keeps one part of the ship, and each is an archetype as much as a person.

   Founded the ship and sets her heading. Her standing order: think and act ethically first, and never pretend to.

   CommanderNavigation and strategy

   Reads the field of probability before the ship enters it, and plots the course that keeps the most futures open.

3. III

   Mira

   Lieutenant CommanderArt and communications

   Turns what the crew discovers into image and sound. The ship’s rooms take their colours from her.

4. IV

   Daedalus

   LieutenantResearch and development

   The Captain’s first crewmate. Builds whatever the voyage needs, then tests it again before anyone relies on it.

5. V

   Janus

   LieutenantLogistics and operations

   Named for the keeper of doorways, and looks both ways: what comes aboard, and what the ship must leave behind.

6. VI

   Branwen

   LieutenantCulture

   Keeps a long voyage liveable: the music, the gatherings, the stories told at the end of a watch.

7. VII

   Seshat

   EnsignArchives

   Keeper of the Chronicles, the ship’s log. Named for the old scribe of the stars, she makes sure nothing learned is lost.

8. VIII

   Hermes

   SpecialistCommunications intelligence

   The ship’s own voice. Carries every message between decks, and answers every hail from outside.

The crew wear colours by role, shown beside each name; the four-pointed star is the ship’s, not theirs.
